![]() Arriving in February 2004, Franz Ferdinand fleshed out the wiry fusion of post-punk and disco of the band's singles. The following January, the band's second single Take Me Out became a top five hit in the U.K., propelling them to greater popularity and laying the groundwork for their debut album. ![]() Franz Ferdinand spent the rest of the year supporting groups such as Hot Hot Heat and Interpol, and in November the Darts of Pleasure EP became their first U.S. Their spiky debut single "Darts of Pleasure" arrived that September and reached number 44 on the U.K. Soon after, the band decamped to Malmö, Sweden to work with producer Tore Johansson at Gula Studios. The band needed a new rehearsal space once their illicit art parties were discovered by the police, and they found one in a Victorian courthouse and jail.īy mid-2002, Franz Ferdinand had recorded an EP's worth of material that they intended to release themselves, but word of mouth about the band spread and they signed to Domino in May 2003. Taking their name from the Austro-Hungarian Archduke whose murder sparked World War I (and hoping they'd have a similarly world-changing effect on music), Franz Ferdinand rehearsed at the Chateau and held rave-like events incorporating music and art ( Hardy graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, and Thomson also posed as a life model there). Eventually, McCarthy and Thomson switched instruments and the band switched practice spaces, moving to an abandoned warehouse that they named the Chateau. The trio had rehearsed at McCarthy's house for a while when they started playing with Thomson, who felt like playing guitar instead of drums. In late 2001, and bassist Bob Hardy began working on music together when they met Nick McCarthy, a classically trained pianist and double bass player who originally played drums for the group despite no prior experience as a drummer. Prior to forming Franz Ferdinand, singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos played in bands such as the Karelia and Yummy Fur (the latter of which also featured drummer Paul Thomson). The group continued to embellish on their signature sound in the 2020s, dabbling in electro pop and vintage glam influences on the new songs included on 2022's best-of Hits to the Head. On 2005's You Could Have It So Much Better, they added more detail and nuance to their style, then expanded on the danceable side of their music on albums ranging from the dub explorations of 2009's Tonight to the sleek disco leanings of 2018's Always Ascending. From the beginning, the group had a flair for translating arty and unexpected concepts and references into widely appealing music and visuals, whether it was the Russian Constructivism-inspired artwork that graced their early releases or the Howlin' Wolf homage in the guitar solos of 2004's smash single "Take Me Out." After laying the groundwork for their sound with that year's Mercury Prize-winning, platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated debut album Franz Ferdinand, the band soon branched out. ![]() While Franz Ferdinand had a kinship with those acts, their lineage also included the arch, angular post-punk of bands such as Wire and the witty, funky jangle of fellow Glaswegians Orange Juice. The Glasgow-based group arrived in the wake of the early-2000s rock revival, with bands such as the Strokes and the Libertines reminding listeners just how refreshing - and evergreen - hook-driven guitar music could be. With their sharply stylish mix of rock and dance music, Franz Ferdinand brought a wry sophistication to indie rock while becoming one of the U.K.'s most popular bands in the early 21st century. ![]()

To play 8 Ball Pool easily any time, you can add it directly to your phone as an app. Instead of just hitting the cue ball hard and hoping you get a lucky ricochet, try placing the ball in an area that won’t give your opponent a good look at sinking any shots. There will be times when you won’t have any real chance of making a shot. This is one of the parts that beginner’s often overlook - the edge of the table can be one of your best friends if you know how to use it correctly.Īnother tip - 8 Ball Pool is as much a defensive game as it is offensive. This includes putting spin on the ball to get different angles, as well as using the edges of the table to get different shots. Remember to use all of the resources that you possibly can. What are some good 8 Ball Pool tips beginners?Ĩ Ball Pool is a very strategic game. If a player pots one or more of their balls on their turn, or any ball on the break, they get another shot, provided they also did not commit a foul. TIP: Click on the cue ball icon at the top of the game screen to adjust the spin. This only happens when you're breaking or when your opponent commits a foul. When you see arrow icons around the cue ball, this means you can click and drag on the ball to move it. Release the mouse button to take your shot. Move your mouse to aim your billiard cue, and click and drag to set your shot power. Fouling when shooting for the 8 ball does NOT result in a game loss, except if you pot BOTH the cue ball and 8 ball with your shot. Caution: if you pot the 8 ball BEFORE your other balls, you automatically lose. When a player has potted all of their (solid or striped) balls, they must pot the black 8 ball to win the game. After hitting one of your balls, failing to pocket a ball or strike a side of the table with either ballĪdditionally, if a player pots their ball AND an opponent's ball on their turn, play passes to their opponent.Failing to hit one of your balls first with the cue ball. ![]() Failing to hit a ball with the cue ball. ![]() If a player commits any of the following fouls, their opponent may take the cue ball in hand, place it anywhere on the table and shoot anywhere on the table: If a player pots one or more of their balls on their turn, or any ball on the break, they get to make another shot, provided they also did not commit a foul. The Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819, for example, gave Spanish portions of the Pacific Northwest to the U.S. Hannegan) and contentious asset long after the War of 1812. Though the Delaney Nootka Trading Company drama from Taboo never happened, Nootka Sound remained a popular ("the finest harbor in the world," according to former U.S. ![]() After three attempts, both countries agreed (in the Nootka Convention) that neither could claim exclusive sovereignty of the area and that Nootka Sound would become a free port. The bold move, dubbed the Nootka Controversy, nearly sent the two countries to war, since England claimed Meares had rightfully purchased the land. In 1789, the Spanish sent Esteban Martínez to officially settle the Nootka Sound, seizing ships financed by England's John Meares upon his arrival. The main difference between the show and the real history of the area is that it wasn't the Americans and Brits who warred over Nootka it was (almost) the English and the Spanish. The sound represented direct access to China and, more specifically, cash money. (Fun fact: The name Nootka was a result of Cook misinterpreting the indigenous people's directions to the sound - " Nootka, Itchme Nootka, Itchme" - as its proper name.) Much like in Taboo, several countries sought control of Nootka Sound as a trade post following Cook's success. The sea otter pelts mentioned reportedly went for $10,000 in Macao - an insane con, as Cook noted the Mowachaht would trade "anything" for his metals. "Their articles were the skins of various animals, such as bears, wolfs, foxes, dear, rackoons, polecats, martins and in particular the sea beaver." "A great many canoes filled with the Natives were about the ships all day, and a trade commenced betwixt us and them, which was carried on the strictest honisty on boath sides," he wrote in his Voyages made in the years 17, from China to the North West Coast of America. It's believed that Spanish ships first discovered Nootka Sound as early as 1774, but it wasn't until 1778 that the first documented interaction with the area and its inhabitants took place, when British explorer Captain James Cook bartered for fur with the Mowachaht. (Today, the term refers to all the aboriginal tribes of western Vancouver Island, including the Mowachaht, who traded with the sound's first European visitors.) As noted in the intro to John Jewitt's White Slaves of Maquinna, the Nuu-chah-nulth were likely people "who had crossed the Bering Strait about 12,000 years ago." Nootka Sound was first populated by the Nuu-chah-nulth, a name you should recognize from Taboo as the tribe of Delaney's late mother. ![]() ![]() ![]() Eventually crippling the big bastard caused a real-life fistpump, a gesture repeated when I got to shoot its driver, commandeer it, patch it up and drive it home. After a few of my squad were squished under its 70-tonne tracks, I began to lay down tripwires and traps. This mission made good use of Company of Heroes 2's true line-of-sight: without eyes on my tanky target, I was left bumbling around in the cold. "there is glory here, and there are heroes."Īnother level deposited me and a handful of ill-equipped conscripts in a freezing town, asking us to take down a near-indestructible Tiger tank with ingenuity and planning. Unlike most squads, the snipers would hold fire until directly ordered to shoot, making traversing the Polish forests a pleasingly efficient military exercise: move one set of snipers to the treeline to provide cover for another leapfrogging duo, before destroying an enemy squad with six carefully aimed bullets fired in a single devastating salvo. One level in Polish territory gave me control of a super-sniper and a few squads of her resistance chums. Company of Heroes 2's quieter missions are its most memorable. It certainly didn't feel that way.īut there is glory here, and there are heroes. I was surprised to see the words 'mission complete'. I managed to hold out against a glorious zero waves on my first go, and as my men were pulverised and the screen faded to black, I planned how better to spread them out to hold the line. Another cast me into one final Soviet-held capture point with a broken and scattered force, before flashing up my next objective: 'hold out against waves of enemies: 0/10'. One asks you to flee the map, burning villages as you go. With the Germans pushing into Russia, the Soviet forces are in full retreat, meaning many missions aren't won so much as vacated. The burden of history weighs particularly heavily on the early quarter of the campaign. ![]() There's historical poignancy in there but it staggers under clumsy delivery methods. The gunner pauses for a moment before turning awkwardly on the spot, grinning like he's been told a joke, and shooting all his mates. Isakovich watches in Stalingrad as a commissar gives a machine gunner the order to shoot retreating troops. They're not rendered in the game's engine and they're not fancy CG, looking more like some terrible Xbox shooter, animated as if their actors were having their emotions signed to them off-stage a minute too late. It's a worthy and true tale – one of traitors and egotists killing their own people – but it's almost entirely undone by cutscenes that look like they were made in 1945. Cutscenes tell the tale of Isakovich, a soldier turned journalist who documents the heroism of average men and women sent to their deaths. It suffers most as a game when it's trying to tell its weighty story. "Company of Heroes 2's worst missions feel like they're backwards."Ĭompany of Heroes 2's worst missions feel like they're backwards: instead of playing the plucky, clever underdogs, you're upgraded to the role of military colossus, infinite resources hurled at the brick wall until sheer erosion cracks a hole. My tactic may have been historically accurate, but trying to drown your opponent in your own soldiers' blood isn't a particularly satisfying strategy to play out in a real-time strategy game. Any lost conscripts could be replaced in seconds, and any lost soldiers could be too: conscripts have the ability to join up with a depleted squad to take them back up to their maximum complement. To avoid coming out of the campaign with actual PTSD, I found it easier to simply roll my forces into a ball – toughest units clustered at the middle, fleshy conscripts on the outside – and smash through enemy positions. This second type of soldier gives Company of Heroes its Soviet tinge, and can sometimes make it unsatisfying to play. In most missions, squads can be trained at your home base or brought into battle as conscripts. That quirk of population translates to game mechanics: as Soviet general-in-the-sky, I had a near-endless stream of people I could click on to send to their doom. The Soviet war effort hinged on the country's ability to spit out prodigious amounts of young men and women to fight and die for their motherland. Learning about this is harrowing playing it is too. "It's a long way into the 15-hour campaign before Relic's real-time strategy game finds any heroism."
